Fighting to Protect and Add Jobs in Maryland. Steny Hoyer is a champion for public and private sector jobs in Maryland and the Fifth Congressional District. He was instrumental in persuading the Navy to relocate 5,000 high-tech jobs to the Patuxent River Naval Station, and helped preserve 3,000 jobs at the Naval Surface Warfare Center at Indian Head and 1,600 jobs at St. Inigoes. He brought 4,000 IRS jobs to New Carrollton. He led the effort to successfully stop a Republican attempt to move the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center from Greenbelt in 1995. He brought 950 new jobs to the FDA facility at College Park, and was instrumental in having National Archives II built at the University of Maryland, College Park, a project that brought 950 new jobs to Prince George's County. He secured funding for the Naval Maritime Intelligence Center, which brought 1,900 jobs to the Fifth District. He secured funding for the new federal courthouse in Greenbelt, which brought 300 new jobs to Greenbelt. He fought successfully to retain 1,500 jobs at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center. And, he has effectively secured funds to consolidate all FDA offices and labs into one state-of-the-art campus in White Oak, Maryland which will eventually provide office and research space for over 7,700 employees.
